During War

After Singapore fell to the Japanese on 15th February 1942, the Choys found themselves without jobs. Subjects in school were changed to Japanese as a part of propaganda, hence Mrs. Choy had to stop teaching and the Borneo Co. where Mr. Choy worked at, ceased to exist once the Japanese took over Singapore. However, doctors and nurses who knew the couple, urged them to help run a canteen stall in the Miyako Hospital(now known as Woodbridge Hospital)to help provide basic necessities to everyone.

Along with her husband, Choy Khun Heng, they supplied medicine, money and messages to British civilians interned in Changi Prison during the Second World War . During the Japanese invasion of Malaya, Elizabeth claimed a position as a volunteer nurse with the Medical Auxiliary Service.  After the British surrendered in 1942,Elizabeth and her husband set up a canteen at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital where they began a regular ambulance run for British civilian internees. The couple helped the Changi prisoners-of-war by delivering cash and parcels containing such things as fresh clothing, medicine and letters during their deliveries, and increased their risk of getting caught by the Japanese by sending in radio parts for hidden receivers until the Japanese crackdown following Operation Jaywick.
